“Dr. Balfour Mount, the 'father of palliative care,' emphasized presence, healing connections, and the potential for quality of life even with serious illness, famously stating, 'It is possible to die healed,' meaning spiritual/emotional healing, not just physical. He stressed that good palliative care focuses on controlling symptoms to allow for meaningful presence, viewing it as a holistic approach to alleviating suffering, not just managing death, and advocated for compassionate care that honors life's present moments.”
In my short six months here, I have been very impressed how all the volunteers – board members, comfort care providers, doulas, grief recovery specialist, fundraising volunteers and staff, have lived out Dr. Mount’s vision of hospice palliative care. This team is excellent in providing presence, healing connections, which allows for emotional and spiritual healing.
Thank you for helping our residents to die healed. Healing means to “feel whole”.
You are an incredible compassionate team making a difference in rural hospice palliative care.
Thank you.

“You matter because you are you, and you matter to the end of your life. We will do all we can not only to help you die peacefully, but also to live until you die.”
- Dr. Cicely Saunders
