Where a Single Ripple Becomes a Wave of Compassion.

As the year comes to a close that approaches so quickly, here at Huron Shores Hospice we take the time to reflect. We invite you into this reflection, and admire the incredible power of one. One ripple that creates waves of compassion throughout our community. We invite you to join us in this movement of creating waves of love, dignity, and compassionate care where every guest is surrounded by love in their final days.

At Huron Shores Hospice, we believe that care begins with a single ripple—one moment of comfort, one gesture of support—spreading outward in waves to lift families, neighbours, and our entire community.

Your gift helps us create these ripples of comfort for families — moments of dignity, peace, and memories that last forever.

Whether through a donation, volunteering, or sharing our message, every action becomes a ripple of kindness that carries forward.

Together, we can keep expanding these waves of compassion, ensuring our hospice remains a place of support, love, and deep human connection.

"A Daughter's Reflection"
Written by Megan Freiburger

"My Mom, Helen McKenzie, spent her final days at Huron Shores Hospice, and I can honestly say we could not have asked for a better place for her—or for us—to walk through the last chapter of her life.

I have supported Huron Shores Hospice for many years—through donations at funerals and as part of a living charity I oversee—because I remember when Cheryl Cottrill first shared her vision for the hospice. I believed it would be a good thing for our community, offering compassionate and dignified care for our loved ones’ final days. I always knew it was a well-run organization directed with compassion, but until last summer, I did not truly understand just how special it was.

When my Mom became sick and was in the hospital, she wanted to go home. Unfortunately, the doctor told us that was not possible. However, she mentioned the possibility of Mom going to Huron Shores Hospice in Tiverton. That gave me hope. Deep down, I knew we could not support her at home—but this felt like the next best thing, and Mom was fine with it too.

Barb, who did Mom’s intake, later told me that one of her most memorable moments during her time at the hospice was when Mom arrived. She said my Mom came off the ambulance like she had just stepped off a private jet—smiling, thanking the attendants, full of grace.

When Mom arrived, they asked her if there was any thing else, she wanted, Mom asked to have her hair washed and cut, and they thought she also asked for a harpist? —That afternoon in walked Paul, who gently washed her hair and cut it right in bed. She smiled and said she felt like a million bucks. And before long, a harpist had been arranged to play, which we cancelled as she didn’t want a harpist. It was clear: they would have done anything to make her happy and comfortable. That’s the kind of care they gave—not just medical, but emotional, spiritual, and deeply personal.

When my son, Dayn came to visit his grandma, he looked around the room and tried to use everything provided, he filled the bird feeders, they colored, watched birds, listened to music, read together, and talked. That memory is a gift.

It was such a difficult time, and in many ways, it’s still a blur. But what remains clear is our deep gratitude for the care my Mom received. Every single person—volunteers, nurses, staff, and Hospice Team—treated her with dignity, and kindness.

Something else I was impressed that the Hospice did was at Christmas, they held a remembrance service for all those who had passed at the hospice that year. When I walked in and saw a harpist playing, I smiled—it brought me right back to those precious days with Mom. They spoke about each person individually as we lit candles in their memory.

Huron Shores Hospice is a true gift to our community, and I will be forever grateful that my Mom’s last days were spent in such a peaceful, compassionate, caring place."
