One Ripple of Kindness Can Change a Final Journey: A Letter from Our Medical Director

"As Medical Director at Huron Shores Hospice I have the privilege of seeing the incredible impact of our community fundraising up close. This year’s theme for our End of Year campaign, “The Ripple of One: Creating Waves of Compassion,” is particularly appropriate and prompts me to share some observations from my unique vantage point.

In my line of work I regularly have conversations outlining the various options for palliative care. Some are aware of hospice and what it entails, but many are not. I do my best to explain what hospice care is, what we can offer at Huron Shores Hospice and why I think it is a good option to consider. Once the resident agrees to a transfer, our staff make the arrangements and I meet with the resident and family once they are admitted and settled. Perhaps the most rewarding interaction for me is that first one, when I get to ask, “so, what do you think?” Without fail, the residents and families glow with happiness and relief when they tell me how much more comfortable they are, how lovely the staff are, how happy they are with the decision they made to come to hospice. Often they will thank me but I am always quick to explain that it is the staff and volunteers doing the heavy lifting and the kindness and generosity of our community that make it possible. A ripple that keeps going, impacting so many.

Recently, we admitted a resident who had advanced dementia with significant symptoms of agitation, confusion and tearful outbursts of uncontrollable weeping. It was heartbreaking seeing her in hospital but I felt relieved when the family had made the difficult decision of coming to hospice. That first visit made my day- she was smiling ear to ear! Her family noted that they hadn’t seen her that happy in a long time. As it has happened countless times in those hospice suites, my eyes welled with tears.

From the bottom of my heart, and on behalf of the residents and families I have had the privilege to care for at Huron Shores Hospice, THANK YOU. Your donations create a ripple of compassion that has been integral to the end of life care in our community and your continued support ensures we are able to spread that ripple on for many years to come."

This Giving Tuesday, you can help us continue to provide this vital care.

Giving Tuesday is a global day of generosity, and this year, we invite you to help us create ripples of compassion across our community. When you support Huron Shores Hospice, your contribution becomes more than a gift—it becomes the beginning of a ripple that brings comfort, dignity, and connection to those at the end of life.

Every action counts. Whether you make a donation, volunteer your time, or simply share our message, the ripple you create extends far beyond today. Together, we can ensure that individuals nearing end of life feel supported, valued, and never alone.

At the end of life, everyone deserves to feel at home—surrounded by the same care, beauty, and respect they experienced at life’s beginning. Your support helps make that possible, one ripple at a time.
