We’re proud to share that Carol Rencheck, Co-Chair of the Huron Shores Hospice Board of Directors and longtime volunteer, has been inducted into the June Callwood Circle of Outstanding Volunteers—a province-wide recognition presented annually by Hospice Palliative Care Ontario (HPCO).
This prestigious award celebrates hospice volunteers across Ontario who exemplify selfless service, compassion, generosity of spirit, and a commitment to excellence in end-of-life care. It is named in honour of the late June Callwood, a renowned Canadian journalist, author, and tireless advocate for hospice.
Carol has been an essential part of the Huron Shores Hospice family since 2017. Over the years, she has taken on many leadership roles, serving as Co-Chair of the Board and contributing her time and expertise to our Executive, Finance, Fundraising, and Governance Committees. Her steady presence, professionalism, and thoughtful guidance have been instrumental in helping our organization grow and thrive.
Beyond her work behind the scenes, Carol also volunteers directly with our residents and their families. As a comfort care volunteer, she offers compassionate bedside support and warmly welcomes families during admissions. She is a tireless advocate for community education around hospice and palliative care and is deeply involved in outreach and engagement.
Carol also brings her heart and energy to fundraising. She plays a key role in our annual Handbags for Hospice gala—where she’s affectionately known as the “designer handbag expert” for her knowledge and passion for curating the perfect auction collection.
“Her warmth, wisdom, and deep commitment to our mission have touched every part of our organization,” says Executive Director Cathy Herbert. “This provincial recognition is a true reflection of the impact she’s made over the past eight years.”
The June Callwood Award was established in 1994 to honour outstanding hospice volunteers and continue the legacy of its namesake, who devoted her life to advocating for vulnerable communities. Each year, HPCO member hospices across Ontario are invited to nominate one exceptional volunteer to be inducted into the Circle.
Please join us in congratulating Carol on this well-deserved honour—and in thanking her for the incredible difference she continues to make in the lives of those we serve.
